The Bowdoin is the state vessel of Maine.


The Bowdoin is an American schooner built in 1921 specifically for Arctic exploration. It was designed by William H. Hand, Jr., under the direction of explorer Donald B. MacMillan, and built in 1921, in East Boothbay, Maine, at the Hodgdon Brothers Shipyard now known as Hodgdon Yachts.

It is currently owned and used by the Maine Maritime Academy, located in Castine, Maine, for their sail training curriculum.

Its status as state vessel was adopted by the Legislature of 1987.[1]
