New Sweden is a town in Aroostook County, Maine. It is part of the Maine Swedish Colony.

In 1870, William W. Thomas, Jr. went to Sweden to recruit the first 51 immigrants for a new Swedish-immigrant colony established by the State of Maine in Aroostook County.

New Sweden has maintained many Swedish traditions, including St. Lucia and Midsommar celebrations. Some residents still speak Swedish in the home. The New Sweden Folk Dancers perform at many of the Swedish celebrations, and Swedish foods are served.

  • The Arootsakoostic Music Festival is held annually at Thomas Park.
